Salutations, Fine Arts Registry.

By Leusa Jones

Ahh, I love art. Don’t you? Sometimes, between the daily back and forth, and the what not, the he said she said, the VAST SPACE of modern life, it seems like the only thing I do that matters. Some days it hits me and I know, I just know, that I could spend my entire life creating and I would be happy. I imagine that it would feel like finding a clear pool of water on a really toasty day. Imagine this pool, with its calm surfaces, the tiny waves breaking, this pool goes on forever, its serene watery depths echoing into infinity. That’s how I feel about what art does for my life.

There are other times when I look at art, mine or someone’s else, and there is little stopping me from grabbing the whole thing and chucking it right out of a fourteen story window, hoping like hell it lands in the path of headstrong delivery truck full of baguettes and bagels. That’s how I feel about bad art.

It’s hard to distinguish between the two, especially because there is no scale for taste. This is perhaps why I feel infinitely more comfortable creating the works, as opposed to judging them. This way I can submerge my soul, and if someone bites, then hey, bully for me! If not, back to the proverbial drawing board…Making a life and a living earned entirely from the art that one creates represents to me the holy grail of, well, of getting what you want out of life. It requires time, patience, and talent, as well as luck, and a bit of grit. The luck and grit you have to sometimes create for yourself. Personally, I’m just getting started. This seems like a nice place to start…the Internet that is. Even in the midst of this dazzling summer that most of us are having, I still spend hours on the computer each day. Like most struggling students, it’s my “second home”.  Sometimes it feels as though parts of me would not even exist if it weren’t for my daily internet commute through cyber-space, complete with little stops every now and again at my various mail boxes, and celebrity gossip junk food. School’s starting back up for me soon, and it’s going to be my last year. Come this time next summer, I’ll just be another B.F.A. graduate floating in a sea of wannabies, frauds, and hopefully, some heart-stopping talent. I definitely, most definitely do not plan on getting sucked up into the jaws of corporate just yet. So I say maybe, just maybe, I’ll get a head start on some of these web-born piranhas of the art world. Maybe, oh just maybe, I’ll finish up that series of watercolors I’ve been dabbling away at for the past two years, and upload them here, on the FAR website, for all of you gorgeous people to see. You never know, you might like them. You might even buy some of them. Or not. But at least I’ll know that they’re mine, and that they’ll be here, snug as buttons, custom made and tagged for posterity, and everyone to see. Forever

Terms of Art: Contracts for the Purchase of Original Art from the Artist

You’ve often seen advice that you should get the terms of your sale or purchase of a piece of artwork in writing. But does just any old writing do? What is it about a piece of paper that turns it into a genuine contract, enforceable in court? Read more

Commissions and Work for Hire

Who owns the copyright to your business logo? You, or the graphic artist who created the image? And does it make any difference if you came up with the idea for the logo design yourself, or if it’s a product of the graphic designer’s imagination? Read more
