Artist Marketing Series - Part II

Throughout history, artists have been struggling to find ways to market their creations, as well as put bread on the table. Such a struggle continues even today as this article titled, Different Ways Artists Managed Throughout History, vividly articulates. This is only one of a series of articles devoted to helping aspiring artists find their path to success.

If one is to understand the marketing concept, a background in the history of the struggle can only enrich the experience. From Medieval times to the present, the past is brought to life in such a way that even those who never had any interest in history are captivated by the tale. For example, artists were considered the lower class and even shunned, due to the fact that they worked with their hands. Often they were considered in the same class as mechanics and brick masons, and this includes the famous Greek sculptors.

Boys were allowed to attend craft schools and of course girls were not even considered. Women were not allowed into what were called, at the time, guilds, most of which were nothing more than crafts schools, such as blacksmithing and barrel makers. Not until about 1600 were girls allowed to attend such training and then only a precious few. The article contains the fascinating story of one such girl who attained, and deservedly so, great recognition at that time. Her name is Judith Leyster (1609–1660). She studied under the famous artist, Hans Hal. Be sure to read her account, it is so inspiring.

To put bread on the table, most artists had to cater to the church, the monarchy and or the state. And if they had not achieved what is called their masterpiece, they would not even be accepted into a guild. Times were difficult for artists then and not until after the Renaissance and with the help of Leonardo da Vinci and others of like fame, did the status of artists change from merely craftsmen to creators of art
