Dali Fakes #7: Setting the Record Straighter
It is truly disturbing the lengths to which dishonest businesses will sink in order to cover their misdeeds. In an article written by David Phillips entitled Setting the Record Straighter, you will read an unsettling account of just such a company.
Mr. Phillips was contracted to write a piece for The Artistʼs Magazine entitled, Fakes and Forgeries: The Story of a Scam. In this exposé he detailed the results of an investigation into fake and fraudulent art sold to unsuspecting victims by a enterprise known as Park West Gallery. The article put forth specific information that supported the contents. However, when the magazine hit the newsstand, Park West Gallery’s lawyers, who had never communicated with Mr. Phillips despite many attempts by him to ask them questions, wrote a threatening, scathing letter to the publisher of the magazine which made clear that either they retract the article or face litigation, a tactic that is all too common with Park West Gallery. SLAPP lawsuits are their way of bullying anyone and everyone into submission or else!
Morris Shapiro, Gallery Director for Park West was the answer for the magazine’s legal department. They were pressured and succumbed to allowing Mr. Shapiro to write an article rebutting Mr. Phillips’s article. Shapiro’s article was published and is an insult to the serious art world. It contains obvious lies intended only to deceive the magazine’s readers. These falsehoods are listed out in Setting the Record Straighter with supporting proof.
Unfortunately, it is not only magazines that are being assaulted, it is the art buying public. Please read the entire story here at fineartregistry.com and become acquainted the truth. The unvarnished truth!
