More Truth for Park West Gallery and its Lone Dali Authenticator, Bernard Ewell
Dali Fakes #4
In an email (courtesy copy provided to FAR® by the Salvador Dalí Gallery to whom the email was directed), Mr. Jay Vincze, Director of Impressionist and Modern Art for Christie’s confirmed that Robert and Nicolas Descharnes are the only recognized experts in the world for the authentication of Salvador Dalí original works of art.
We happen to know that Park West Gallery has referred many claimants/victims to Bernard Ewell for an appraisal on the Albaretto/Dalí artwork he authenticated for Park West Gallery. We also know that Ewell charged Park West Gallery customers professional fees for his “expert” opinions...

| It is interesting that much of the discussion regarding Dali and the aftermath of his "works" occupies much of the focus of authenticity in fine art. Some would argue that FAR is spending too much time on Dali. Frank Hunter, Dali archivist, noted in a personal correspondence that we should look at other artists who have questionable authorship of their works. Dali is not the only artist whose works have been forged. We know that Rembrandt created 4000 works and that 10000 of them exist in the US. We know that Corot would sign works as favors to his friends. Picasso is copied extensively. What sets Dali apart from the rest of the art creating world is the fact that by far he took forgery, and authorship for a spin. It is alleged that 350,000 forgeries of Dali exist. Whether this quantity exists is academic. It could be more or it could be less. The thrust here is not between 4000 and 6000 but between 4000 and 350000. Did Dali sit in bed during breakfast and sign hundreds of blank lithos? Is it true that 700 plus Dali signatures exist? Did he hire an underling to paint his works because he was suffering from various ailments preventing his authorship? Did a management cabal create many works while he was sick? The scope of this prolific fraud may never be determined. The significance of Dali is not the extent of the possible fraud but the fact that no controls, standards, or regulations exist to ascertain authentic vs. non-authentic in the world of fine art. In point, there are more standards and controls to prevent fraud in the sale of a jalopy than in the sale of a $100 million work of fine art. |
